How Kiva Works
1) It all starts with our Field Partners, which are microfinance institutions operating around the world. Our Field Partners approve and disburse a microloan to an entrepreneur in their community. They take a picture of the entrepreneur and write down the entrepreneur’s story.
2) The Field Partner uploads the entrepreneur’s profile to Kiva’s website. The profile, if it’s not in English, is translated by one of our hundreds of volunteer translators. After translation, the profile appears live on Kiva.org
3) Lenders like you browse the entrepreneurs’ profiles and choose someone to lend to, using PayPal or their credit cards.
4) Kiva provides the funds to our Field Partners by aggregating the loan funds from all contributing lenders. Most Field Partners then use the Kiva lender funds to backfill the loan they’ve already disbursed to the entrepreneur. Disbursals can happen up to 30 days before, or 30 days after a loan request is uploaded to the Kiva website.
5) Over time, the entrepreneur repays her loan. The Field Partner collects those repayments and lets Kiva know if a repayment was not made as scheduled. We give Field Partners the option to cover both currency losses and entrepreneur defaults.
To speed things up and to minimize the number and expense of wire transfers, Kiva works on a net billing system. This means that, for any given month, we subtract the amount of repayments that a Field Partner owes to Kiva lenders from the amount that a Field Partner fundraises for entrepreneurs on Kiva.
If the balance is positive, that means that the Field Partner has raised more than they need to repay, and we use those funds to credit your lender account with the repayments due to you. Tell me more

in the year 2009 in the so called Home of the Brave and Land of the Free and
How can this be?
and O, America the Beautiful and the most civilized
Of all nations!
And what a backward Country indeed!
And Segregation reigns Supreme in the Home of the Brave and...
It looks like SEGREGATION Never truly ENDED, after all
And it is Segregation upon Segregation and Segregation
And It is ALL Nothing but a whole lot SEGREGATION
And this is nothing but BROWN versus the Board
Of Education and this this the Board
Of Education versus Brown
All over again
and Again

Segregation

Whole of Hate and Ignorance

Dear friends,
Two weeks ago outside Philadelphia, sixty-five children from a summer camp tried to go swimming at a club their camp had a contract to use. Evidently, the club didn't know the kids were largely Black.
When the campers entered the pool, White parents took their kids out of the water, and the swimming club's staff asked the campers to leave. The next day, the club told the summer camp that their membership would be canceled and that they would refund their money. When asked why, the club's leader said the "kids would change the complexion ... and the atmosphere of the club."
A "Whites only" pool in 2009 should not be tolerated. The club's actions appear to be a violation of section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act. Whether or not any laws were violated, a "Whites only" pool should be something every American condemns.
I've just joined ColorOfChange.org in doing exactly that -- will you join me, and email your friends and family asking them to do the same? We're also calling on the Department of Justice to evaluate suing the facility under federal law. It takes just a moment to do both, here:

Obama is President but that doesn't mean that suddenly all is fine when it comes to race in America. This is a vivid reminder of what we know still lies beneath the surface.
We all know stories like this one -- similar incidents play out quietly every day in different communities across the country. The difference in this case is that folks got caught and there was a contract in place that makes for a potentially illegal act.
Standing up now isn't just about making things right for these kids in Philadelphia or bringing consequences to this swim club (called the Valley Swim Club). It's about creating a climate of accountability everywhere. If we can publicly shame the Valley Swim Club and hold them accountable for this incident, it will make others think twice before engaging in this kind of discrimination.
Please join me in condemning the Valley Swim Club's blatant discrimination and calling on the Justice Department to investigate whether they violated civil rights laws. And please ask your friends and family to do the same.

One of the Saddest Days of My Life
Michael, may you rest in peace. I'm so upset and shocked and is still in shock.
Today has been one of the most saddest days of my Life.
I do not want you to go, Michael.
I still I'm in denial about your transition and I refuse to belief and
I am so heartbroken and in complete disbelief and
Why and Why and Why O Why?
And
May you Rest well, Michael.
and
May you rest, Well, Michael.
and My heart is just so, so, so, broken.
and I yearned to see to see you grow old and be a witness to your own legend, Michael.
I have always rooted for you secretely and permanently and here you leave us so
promptly, so young, Michael.
I love you and I wanted to see you be here/
I wanted to see you be here and I know you always will be but I wanted to see you help nurture all those would-be Michaels yet to come and/or already existing.
My heart is so BROKEN with shock at the news of your passing, Michael.

Duke Energy (DE) and their position... what makes you of DE and their position on this issue?
